Hey everyone 👋🏾

I’ve been going on weekly Saturday morning park runs 🏃🏾 (5km) with some of my friends in medical school for a month or so now and I’ve found it to be an amazing experience.

I think there are two key lessons that you can apply to your own life:

  1. Accountability
  2. Sizzling starts (not the writing type!)

Every time I get to around the 3km mark during the park run, I find myself getting extremely tired (not a good sign for my fitness lol) and feeling like I want to quit. Often, the only thing that keeps me going is the fact that there are 3-4 other people running with me who will leave me behind if I stop.

Even though I could run 5km by myself if I wanted, the experience of doing it with other people makes process much more manageable.

This isn’t a groundbreaking revelation, but I think that we don’t apply accountability to our own lives enough considering how powerful it is.

I am guilty of trying to do everything alone when it would be much easier to do alongside others. I’ll be trying to reach out to my friends more to study and work, especially when exams approach towards the end of the year.

The second reason park runs have been so beneficial is because they allow me to start my Saturday mornings with something productive. The run usually starts at 8am, and I’m often given the feeling that I’m doing something not many people would do.

I don’t mean this in a pretentious, I’m better than others kind of way, but it gives me a sense of personal satisfaction and pride that I’m able to start my weekend doing something to better myself.

This satisfaction follows through to the rest of my weekend. Weekends are often my time to work on things that I’ve been putting on the back burner for the week (Youtube, reflecting, this newsletter) and I find that I’m able to approach these tasks with more enthusiasm and enjoyment.

So, if you’ve got a local park run, I’d highly recommend you give it a go and see the benefits for yourself! If you’re in Melbourne, reply back and maybe we can even do one together!
