It’ll be a short newsletter today as I’m getting rather busy with exams and work. I’ve recently been posting on TikTok (follow me @emileddy :) ), and this has resulted in me spending a larger time than usual on the app.
Previously, I used TikTok quite sparingly, and I had deleted the app for a long time. Interestingly, I’ve noticed a few things:
1. TikTok is incredibly good at keeping attention - I feel like I could scroll on TikTok for hours without noticing the time passing, but that I would also be well entertained for that time. As I’m exploring with making short form content, I find that it’s much easier to make entertaining.
2. TikTok learning is quite transient - There are many times where I watch a video and think “oh, that’s interesting!” but then scroll past and never make a note of what I had learnt. Unfortunately, relatively useful information I learn from TikTok is hardly ever retained or put to good use.
3. TikTok RUINS your attention span - Considering that the vast majority of videos on Tiktok are <1 minute long, I’ve realised that my feed tends to show me shorter and shorter videos the more time I spend on it. Furthermore, videos of a person speaking are difficult to sit through, even though I might easily sit through a YouTube video of similar quality.
Overall, I’ve been trying to minimise my time on the app, as I feel that it has a negative influence on my habits. I don’t have a lesson to take away from this, but I hope this prompts some thoughts for you as well!
